From the very beginning, it was a project aimed at raising the bar of safety and technology features applied for heavy-duty trucks. Freightliner started a giant project in the early 1990's, and it took several years of efforts before the original Freightliner Century Class engine was produced in Portland in 1996. The Century Class formed the first product line manufactured by the company since Daimler-Benz took over Freightliner. As for the word "Century," it was added to the truck name due to several reasons, including the fact that the new truck embodied all the company's achievements that were to enter the 21st century. On March 21, 1996, the Mid-America Trucking Show unveiled new Century Class truck and some of its high-tech parts and options, including new Eaton Top-2 manual 10-speed transmission. The transmission was designed to operate manually through the first 9 gears and to automatically shift between the ninth and the tenth gear.
Freightliner introduced two siblings of the Century Class: the C 112 medium-length conventional truck and the C 120 long conventional truck, where numbers indicated the 112-inch and 120-inch BBC length respectively. Both models came with a choice of cabs. The raised roof truck came with either a 58-inch or a 70-inch sleeping cab, while the mid-roof truck was also available with a 48-inch one. Day cab version was offered as well. The data logging unit and mobile satellite communications system were included into the on-board systems of the driver message center to reduce possible downtime. Freightliner offered the Caterpillar C10 diesel engine with the output up to 370 hp and Caterpillar C 12 diesel engine with the maximum output of 425 hp. Maintenance costs were decreased due to such Freightliner Century parts as the Rockwell Permanent Lube driveline and a maintenance-free front axle suspension. Freightliner offered alternator with self-diagnostics system and a collision warning radar system to ensure control over the road situation.
Ongoing improvements of the Freightliner Century parts gave considerable results. The refined truck version comes with a new addition, S/T, to its name. The letters stand for Safety and Technology as the main principles of the design philosophy. Based on the original Freightliner Century Class, the S/T represents a new stage in development of its predecessor. Nowadays, the Freightliner Century S/T CST 112 is available with a medium conventional cab and the CST 210 with a long conventional cab. Engine choice includes Mercedes Benz, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and Cummins with the output from 280 hp up to 600 hp. Even the smallest accessories for the Freightliner Century are designed with the deep understanding of the driver's needs. Cabin comfort is provided by noise and road vibration reduction technology, air conditioning and heating system with air filtration, and spacious cab with ample headroom. The lower front hood contributes to the aerodynamics and enhances driver visibility. The central part of the bumper is made of steel, while all the critical areas are covered with damage-tolerant plastic. Optionally, the company offers the following Freightliner Century parts: Roll Stability Advisor, Roll Stability Control, and Lane Guidance systems for safety improvement. The gross weight of the Century Class S/T ranges from 33,000 lb up to 77,000 lb.
Built to take on all the heavy tasks one could handle, the Freightliner Century has clearly made its case as one of the most intriguing options for truckers across the globe. The Freightliner Century is hulking, aerodynamic, and plenty comfy inside the cab. But what's most important is that a model like this is often a "home away from home" for its drivers.
