The Fiat Grande Punto, which became the third generation of Fiat supermini, debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005. Its attractive accessories and dynamic design were developed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who once was named Car Designer of the Century. Fiat manufactured the Grande Punto in three body styles, namely 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks and 3-door panel van. All three types had front-engine, front-wheel drive layout, Fiat-GM Small platform, and 99in wheelbase. The word 'Grande' was added to the model name to mark it out from the predecessors as per the size characteristics, which put it on the top of its category: 159'' long, 66.4'' wide and 59'' high. The Fiat Grande Punto was in production up to 2009 when a facelift variant named Punto Evo was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Grande Punto was offered in three engine variations: petrol engine, diesel engine and CNG. Petrol engine was available in 5 types, including Fire Turbojet and Multiair Turbojet units. All three diesel engines were Multijet I4 units with the capacity of 1.3L, 1.6L, and 1.9L. The Fiat Grande Punto with 1.4L Fire Natural Power I4 CNG was also available. The maximum power was 130 bhp generated by 1.9L Multijet I4 diesel unit and the minimum index was 65 bhp produced by 1.2L Fire I4 petrol unit. Three types of transmission were used in production: 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearbox, as well as semi-automatic transmission. The car came off in three different model trims, Active, Dynamic, and Sporting. As for the environmental protection, all the engine parts of the Fiat Grande Punto complied with European emission standards Euro IV for passenger cars.

Besides emission standards compliance, the Fiat Grande Punto parts were designed to meet rigorous safety standards. The Grande Punto successfully passed tests of the European NCAP. Following the independent assessment, this car got five stars in a crash test for passenger protection and three out of four stars for pedestrian safety. In compliance with the EuroNCAP regulations, interior of the vehicle was provided with all necessary safety equipment and accessories, except for the driver knee airbag and ISOfix front. In case the most powerful engines mounted, the Fiat Grande Punto was equipped with such parts as electronic stability control, implemented to improve safety by detecting and decreasing skids. Another technology was the traction control system mounted to prevent loss of traction of the driven wheels and to insure the vehicle control regardless the road conditions. For the Grande Punto with lower power engines, installation of ESC and TSC technologies came as an additional option.
