About Dodge Promaster

It’s hard to find a European who has never heard of or knows nothing about the Fiat Ducato, the universal utility van that ensures a high level of comfort to its owner. Because of the high popularity this automobile has accumulated in Europe, Ram engineers decided on adapting Fiat Ducato vans to American tastes and needs. As a result, the all-new Dodge Promaster based on the FWD Ducato made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 2013. Production of the new vehicle was set to start in Chrysler’s Satillo plant (Mexico, USA), in the third quarter of 2013. The Dodge Promaster makes it a four-way battle for the high-roof full-size-van segment, competing with such popular vans as the Nissan NV, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and Ford’s new Transit.

The Dodge Promaster’s front end is similar to that of the Fiat: it features twin-reflector headlamps and a wide, wrap-around bumper; the only exception is a Ram crosshair grille that gives the van a real utilitarian look. Under the skin, the vehicle was retuned for higher payloads and harsher roads, ensuring better protection against corrosion. The Promaster can boast of maximum 5,145 lbs payload capacity along with a 5,100 lbs towing capacity. It has 13 various configurations, with three wheelbases (118″, 136″, and 159″); high and low roofs (101″ and 90″); and cutaway, chassis cab, and cargo van versions. The last one features a reinforced sub-frame that extends the length of the vehicle, whereas the chassis cab’s unibody structure finishes at the back of the cab; the ladder-bar frame runs up to the rear. In terms of body types, this automobile is much more flexible than any Dodge van ever offered.

The Dodge Promaster is available in a choice of two engines: the standard one, which is Chrysler’s Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 generating 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and the optional originating from the Fiat – a 174-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline four-cylinder EcoDiesel engine producing 295 lb-ft of torque. Transmissions are a 6-speed automatic for the standard V6 and a 6-speed automated manual for the diesel. Regardless of the transmission and engine type, the power is delivered to the front wheels. At the front there is a strut-type suspension, while the back of the Promaster features a beam axle with a Hotchkis leaf-spring system. Such parts as disc brakes with Brembo dual-piston calipers on each corner and electronic stability control are included in the package too. The electronic stability control includes brake and hill-start assist, emergency stopping, hydraulic boost compensation, brake-lock differential system, trailer-sway control, drift compensation technology, automatic brake lamp actuation, and rollover mitigation.

When it comes to the design of the van, whether exterior or interior, it would be fair to say that the Promaster has all the beauty of a metallic brick. But that’s exactly what this ubiquitous vehicle is meant to be if it is supposed to survive in a world where attractiveness takes a back seat to improved fuel economy and cargo capacity, generous roof height, and low load floor. All parts and accessories of the vehicle are built with durability and safety in mind; therefore, the Promaster features comfortable, adjustable seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel with ergonomic grip, oversized power side mirrors with adjustable wide-angle sections, door panels with padded armrests, and many other advanced systems and parts to make traveling in this van as enjoyable as possible.

2014 Dodge Promaster | Posted by Dennis | (Apache Junction, AZ)

The mounting hardware is very robust but needs another mount on each side as the running boards sag when stepped on when entering my Ram van. The style of the running boards with the black plastic inserts matches the black plastic trim of my van and the extruded aluminum look is much more stylish than the pipe style of other manufactures. Installing the running boards had one problem which involved drilling out some of the holes on some body panels for the mounting bolts. This was easily solved with a stepped reamer from Harbor Freight. Took me about two hours of to do the job. I am pleased with the look and practical improvement for my passenger to enter and exit my vehicle.
