The Korean automobile manufacturer Daewoo Motors started production of the front-wheels drive subcompact Daewoo Lanos in 1997. The car was designed as a replacement for the Nexia model, but later in 2002 it itself was replaced with Kalos model in North America. This lineup of Korean cars was produced under many brands and model names in different countries. The development process of the Lanos started off in 1992 with the market analysis. The first 150 prototypes included such parts as the AC Rochester engine components, GM Powertrain automatic transmission, ARS Passive Rückhaltesysteme GmbH airbags and Delco Chassis Division brakes. Production of the Daewoo Lanos parts, assembly of the model, and sales commenced in 1997.
The Daewoo Lanos was available in several trims, including S, SE, Se Plus, and SX. Beginning with the basic S and to the top SX version, every trim delivered additional options, such as CD and radio, fog lights, air conditioner, power windows, etc. The Sport trim replaced CX version in 2001-2002 and featured such accessories and amenities as red and black leather seats, metallic silver dash trim, and window controls located in the doors instead of the central panel. The car was powered by GM Family 1.5L SOHS and 1.6L DOHC engines, 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission and shared its suspension with the Vauxhall/Opel Astra.
One of the noticeable facts about the Daewoo Lanos is that the final exterior and interior styling and parts was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, founder of the famous automobile design and engineering company Italdesign. Though the Daewoo America with its Lanos model disappeared from the United States in 2002, the rebadged version of the Daewoo Kalos, named Aveo, entered the North American market in 2004.
What separates Daewoo Lanos from most sub-compacts is its eager body-style that seems to invite a completely different fashion sense than its contemporaries. The aerodynamic sensibility that resonates from the hood down to the grille has been a customizing favorite for many of its drivers. The Lanos has enough of a kick to perform with authority when called upon, and can be seen zipping past the competition even now. A touch of sleekness and tech-savvy options make the Lanos a model that has something for everybody.
