CURT Towing 101 CURT - F.A.Q CURT - About

  • Choose the right ball mount for your receiver
  • Use adapter bushing (sold separately) if the shank hole diameter is larger than required
  • Robotic welded for extra durability
  • Various lengths and drop to fit your trailer and vehicle properly

The Ball mount is a critical part of any trailer hitch installation. The primary consideration is that the mount be strong enough to handle the trailer without failing or bending. It also needs to fit the hitch receiver and the mounting shank on the hitch ball. The ball mount is also your best opportunity to make the hitch ball the correct height to level your trailer. So start your search for the mount with the maximum weight your vehicle is rated to tow and the correct receiver size, 1-1/4", 2" or 2 -1/2". Then choose a ball of the correct weight rating and shank diameter. Only now can you start looking for a ball mount of the correct drop or rise. If you’ll be towing a variety of trailers, your best bet might be an adjustable ball mount so you can set the drop correctly without having to have a variety of mounts on board.

Works fine. Seems solid. Sits at the right height for what I want. What more could I ask?

I used this extra long ball mount to attach a hitch mount bike rack (3 bikes). I have a 2000 Rav4 and the normal length ball mount did not extend far enough backward for the bike rack vertical support to clear the spare tire (Rav4's have a spare tire on the back door/hatch). I used this in the upside-down position, despite it not being rated for that. Looking at how it's constructed, I would say it would be safe in that position even for a trailer. It's extremely solid. Welds are perfect. CARiD was quite great to deal with and the entire transaction went as smoothly as can be.
