About Chrysler Aspen

Introduced by Chrysler at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, the Aspen has provided the American automaker with its first large vehicle to compete with other big names on the road. The Chrysler Aspen is a full-size SUV that premiered in time for the 2007 model year. It is essentially a rebadged version of the Dodge Durango, with the main difference laying in some parts of the Chrysler Aspen powertrain, and mostly in the decor and styling. The Aspen does hold the distinction of being the first truck-based SUV offered on the Chrysler roster. The Aspen features three rows of seating for up to eight passengers as well as all-wheel drive. At its debut it was equipped with a standard 4.7L V8 good for 235 horsepower and 300 pounds-per-foot of torque. A bolder 5.7L Hemi V8,which produced 335 horsepower along with 370 pounds-per-foot of torque was also available. Both engines were mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

As for the model's dimensions, the Chrysler Aspen measured in with a wheelbase of 119.2 inches, a width of 76 inches, a height of 74.3 inches, and an overall length of 200.8 inches. For its second year on the road in 2008, the Chrysler Aspen's 4.7L V8 got a boost all the way up to 303 horsepower. New Chrysler Aspen parts, such as navigation system and a new rearview camera, were also introduced, as was Chrysler's limited lifetime powertrain warranty. Towards the end of the year Chrysler released the Aspen Hybrid, which utilized a 5.7L Hemi V8 engine combined with a Two-Mode Hybrid system that was designed with the help of GM and BMW. The Aspen HEV showcased 345 horsepower along with 380 pounds-per-foot of torque thanks to the two electric motors. It also featured a two-mode transmission with variable-ratios in order to adjust to road speed. Fuel efficiency was improved to 19 mpg city/20 mpg highway. The length of the Aspen HEV came in at 202.1 inches and its height measured at 73.6 inches.

2009 ushered in several other changes to the Aspen, including a boost to the 5.7L Hemi V8, increasing the output to 376 horsepower and 401 pounds-per-foot of torque. Once again, the base engine was the 4.7L V8 capable of 303 horsepower. Engines were directed through a five-speed automatic transmission. Trim levels included the Limited and Limited HEV (Hybrid). The Limited showcased both two and four-wheel drive, 18" alloy wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, a rear-parking camera, rear-park assist, a power driver's seat, a power tailgate, a tilted steering column, a 40/20/40 reclining second-row and a 60/40 split-folding three-passenger third row, climate control, and a premium eight-speaker audio system with CD and digital music storage capability. A special J Package came with the Hemi V8 engine, heated auto-dimming mirrors, leather upholstery, heated front-seats, automatic climate control, driver-memory functions, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, navigation, and remote entry/start. Hybrid versions of the Chrysler Aspen featured similar accessories and equipment but added real-time traffic to the navigation system and came with four-wheel drive as standard.

The Aspen has created an enormous buzz in such a short period of time, drivers all over have been lining up to get a view for themselves. AWD and a V8 engine give the model the strong performance rating, but its size and versatility are what has really opened eyes up. The ultimate in superior design, the Chrysler Aspen can accomplish goals usually reserved for top-line pickups, but conforms to all of the aesthetic qualities that make SUVs the perennial flavor of the month.
