As one of the world’s premier pickups, the Chevy Silverado is as recognizable as it gets. Along with the Ford F series, the Silverado is one of the two most widely distributed vehicles in the country. Bolstered by over a decade of service as well as a reputation for dependability, this Chevy has something to offer to drivers of every background. Built to be battering-ram tough and styled just enough to paint a rugged yet pretty picture, the Silverado takes its place among the leaders of the pack.
The name Silverado has been in existence since 1960, but it wasn’t until the late nineties when Chevy decided to use it full time for their line of light pickup trucks. There are currently eight different series of the Silverado visible of the road. They include the 1500HD, 2500HD, 3500HD, SS, Intimidator SS, Silverado Hybrid, and the “new” Silverado. The 1500HD, 2500HD, and 3500HD represent the “workmanlike” fleet of Silverados. All three offer a variant of a Vortec V8, with the 2500HD available with a 5-speed Allison transmission. The main difference between the 2500HD and the 3500HD rests with the wheels and exterior accessories. The 3500HD features dual twin wheels at the rear along with a reinforced axel and suspension. Designed after the 1500 and featuring a Z60 suspension and a bunch of power-enhancing parts, the SS is seen as more performance-based than its brethren, and is accepted by a wider demographic due to its neat packaging and versatile look. The “new” Silverado, based on the GMT900 platform, debuted in 2006 for the ’07 model year. A full-size that delivers power as well as utility, this version of the Silverado has been a success right from the beginning.
The Chevy Silverado has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including being named Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year (2007). Sales of the Silverado have been extremely strong, as well. Since its debut, the average amount of units sold is listed at just over 630,000. A better example of this is perhaps in 2008, when in the midst of a down-cycle within the American automotive industry, Chevy still managed to move 465,000 Silverado models. These figures not only illustrate Chevy’s desire to center its marketing strategy on the truck, but also due to the enormous reputation and high-quality parts, the Silverado still enjoys popularity. There are a several vehicles that can be credited for not only making a name for themselves, but also for having a palpable influence on their segment and the driving public in general. The Silverado is one of those vehicles.
Nothing seems to be able to replace the appreciation that Chevy drivers feel for their vehicles, and the Silverado is perhaps the most compelling piece of evidence why that is so. The Silverado has managed to produce results that have left an awe-inspiring legacy. Whether it has been the tough and dependable 1500HD and 3500HD, or the intuitively styled and high-performance infused SS series, the Silverado has delivered unrivaled satisfaction and success to wishful drivers from coast to coast and across the globe. Everyone prefers something different as to why they find their model is so satisfying. With Silverado owners, the answer lies with their unwavering devotion.

Almost a year before General motors went bankrupt, the automaker adjourned the next generation Chevrolet Silverado as well as GMC Sierra from 2012 to an unknown future date. High gas prices have negatively affected the truck sales. With the reduction in sales, the news came as no surprise.
The Chevrolet Silverado, being the best selling truck last month, faced a loss of 15.7 percent in sales. According to the Automotive News, General Motors plants, which build Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will be idled during 2012. These trucks will not be produced until 2013.
GM hasn't been very forthright with the amount of changes scheduled for the next-generation trucks, though the expectation is that the updates will be substantial. With 2016 fuel economy regulations right around the corner and the recent resurgence of $4 per gallon gasoline, the new pickups will definitely need to be lighter and more efficient.
Adding fuel to the fire of competition among heavy-duty truck manufacturers, Chevrolet launched HD to HD, a video series that plays off the 2011 Chevy Silverado HD with its old-standing rivals on both the test track and off-road paths.
In a series of real-words tests, the Silverado HD competes against the 2011 Ford Super Duty and the 2011 Dodge Ram HD diesels. The three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups were compared by an independent company in several categories, including acceleration, passing, and braking test, all conducted with a loaded bed, or a loaded trailer. Other probes measured the effectiveness of the exhaust brakes on long downgrades and the stiffness of the frames during twist-ditch simulations. Silverado HD trucks outpaced the competitors in acceleration and in passing, at both sea level and at 6,000 feet while towing loaded trailers.
We worked hard on the Duramax-Allison combination to deliver torque smoothly throughout the entire power band, said Rick Spina, GMs global vehicle line executive for full size trucks. That is what gives us class-leading acceleration.
While HD to HD tests were meant to showcase capabilities that matter to truck buyers most of all, fuel economy was not included in this round of testing. The fuel efficiency comparisons will probably be conducted later this year, after the new High Output Ram 3500 goes on sale in June.
Motor Trend, the global automotive authority on vehicles, announced Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty as its Truck of the Year. The award is one of the world's most respected automotive accolades.
The Motor Trend team tested two Chevy Silverado HDs, two GMC Sierra HDs and two Ford super Duties back to back in a number of different conditions.
According to the editors, all changes made by the engineers for 2011 Silverado HD could be felt immediately. Although, the trucks exterior might not look really different from the 2007-10 model, the contents have been seriously revised. Both three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks got new fully boxed frames, more crossmembers and hydroformed frame segments. Plus, the new model features all-new front and rear suspensions, brakes and axels. As a result, the overall stiffness was drastically increases; vibrations were reduced; the general driving control and ride were improved.
2011 marks the 22nd year for the Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award®. Previous winners have included the 2010 Ram Heavy Duty, 2009 Ford F-150 and the 2008 Toyota Tundra.
