Diesel Version of the Chevrolet Cruze Sedan Coming to America

Chevrolet plans to introduce a diesel-powered version of the Cruze sedan to the American market. If the reports prove true, the Chevrolet Cruze will be the first diesel-powered passenger car to join the GM’s North American lineup since 1980. Compact sedan is probably to share the same power-plant used in the Australian version of the Cruze. This vehicle features a 2.0-liter diesel engine producing 147-hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. The American diesel version is reportedly aiming for a 50-mpg highway rating to fulfill increasingly strict requirements of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE).

Chevrolet Cruze diesel will enter the United States market as a 2013 model year. The vehicle will be on sale in late 2012. It is expected that a starting price of the diesel-powered version will be several thousand above the price of the current petrol-powered model, as the diesel power-unit costs more to produce. There are rumours that Chevrolet may propose a high-content level for the Cruze diesel models to compensate the added cost of the diesel engine. More details regarding the compact sedan Chevrolet Cruze will be informed closer to its launch.

According to General Motors, 65% of all compact cars sold in Europe are hatchback versions. That is why the company decided to build a hatchback. The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze five-door hatchback (HB5) was presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The new vehicle attracts the customers with useful rear cargo space, better fuel economy, sportier and sleeker body with front and rear overhangs comparing to the previous four-door version.

The hatchback comes with a range of powerplants, such as 124 horsepower 1.6-liter, 141 horsepower 1.8-liter engine, or a 163 horsepower 2.0-liter Orlando turbo diesel coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. The Chevrolet does not try to hide that fact that the 2012 Chevy Cruze looks almost identical to the Cruze Hatchback concept car presented earlier in Paris. The only changes that have been made are the removal of LED daytime running lights, blue brake calipers, and blue headlight covers. The 2012 Chevy Cruze safety features include a crush-resistant roof, 10 standard airbags, electronic stability control system. With sales staring mid-2011 in Europe, the Chevy Cruze will not be released in the USA yet.
