The Chevy Corsica arrived in showrooms in spring 1987 as an early 1988 model. It was a front-wheel drive compact car produced by GM till 1996. The Corsica came to replace the Chevrolet Citation, and it was accompanied by another Chevy vehicle – the Chevrolet Beretta, with which it shared its powertrains and mechanical structure. The Corsica was built on the L-body platform and came in four trims and two body styles. While a four-door sedan was available from the very beginning, a five-door hatchback version was added in 1989. First-generation models had standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine offering 90 hp and an optional 2.8-liter V-6 making 130 horsepower. Both powertrains came with a three-speed automatic transmission as optional and a standard five-speed manual transmission. The Corsica got some minor updates during the first production year: all V-6 models received larger stabilizer bars and an upshift light, while an FM /AM stereo radio equipped with digital clock became standard.

Together with the newly arrived hatchback body style, an LTZ performance package was introduced in 1989. This sporty performance package included V6 engine, gas-pressurized shock absorbers, 15-inch alloy wheels, stabilizer bars, sport suspension, gauge package with tachometer, and quick-ratio power steering. In 1990, the Corsicas were equipped with larger engines. The base 2.0-liter I4 engine with 90 hp was replaced with a larger 2.2-liter version good for 98 horsepower. The 2.2-liter V6 was substituted as well, and now it was a 3.1-liter engine producing 135 hp and 120 lb-ft of torque. Minor changes were also made to the driver controls. Soon after that, in 1991, the Chevy Corsica received a restyled dash, driver's side airbag, and cup holders, but lost its sporty LTZ trim. Instead of it, a new Z52 performance package was introduced as an option for both body styles. The trim included a sport steering wheel, Level III suspension, and 15-inch rims. In 1992, the Corsica got equipped with anti-lock brakes that became a standard feature. While the optional V-6 still produced 140 hp, the base 2.2-liter engine received additional 15 horsepower, and now it delivered 110 hp. The same year, the Chevy Corsica lost its hatchback version because of the low sales figures.

The 1993 Chevrolet Corsica had the same parts and components as the previous model, except for the additional low-oil-level warning light and shift interlock. The next Corsica came only in one trim, with a 2.2-liter 4I engine that now made 120 hp, instead of 110. A three-speed automatic transmission became the only offered with this 4-cylinder engine. The 3.1-liter V6 with the OBD-I was replaced with the updated Gen III engine. Front seat belts, in their turn, were replaced by manual lap and door-mounted shoulder belts. In 1995, there were few changes made to the Corsica's exterior. The innovative daytime running lights became available as a standard feature. Also, side moldings, a body-colored grille, and mirrors were introduced, along with a new Corsica logo. Larger tires and a revised rear suspension were added as well. Those were the last changes made to the vehicle. Serving more than nine years, the Chevy Corsica was substituted by the Chevy Malibu. The production of the vehicle stopped in summer 1996.
