General Motors began the overall revision of the Cadillac brand in 1999. As a result, the Cadillac CTS was introduced. The CTS second generation was offered in 2008. Technically upgraded the CTS still lacked in something. GM needed new models that could compete with Mercedes, BMW and Lexus in terms of performance and prestige. A Direct Rival to BMW 3 Series Unveiled

New luxury sports sedan, the ATS was presented at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show as a direct rival to the BMW 3 Series. According to the auto maker, the ATS will not just compete, but beat the current segment leading vehicle.

One of the notable updates is the weight reduction, which was the key in car's development. It resulted in the improved performance and efficiency, yet more nimble driving overall. Such parts as the magnesium engine mounts, “natural-fiber” door trim panels, and the aluminum hood also resulted the vehicle's balance.

The other significant improvement is the addition of the optional 270-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. As for the design, the newly built ATS's overall shape is similar to the CTS's, yet featuring design cues from the new XTS flagship sedan. The prominent two-piece grille was widened and toned-down on the chrome. The auto maker equipped new ATS with such safety and convenience technologies: blind spot monitoring, intelligent brake assist, lane departure warning, hill hold assist, full speed adaptive cruise control, a collision alert system, a back-up camera, and adaptive forward lighting. While the vehicle got adjustable Magnetic Ride Control suspension as standard equipment as well as a ZF variable electric steering system and 17-inch wheels, Brembo brakes and 18-inch wheels are optional.

Cadillac Ready to Produce Entry-Level ATS

GM's luxury subsidiary Cadillac has officially confirmed the plans to begin mass production of its new entry-level model, the Cadillac ATS, which has been in development since before General Motors filed for bankruptcy. The vehicle is set to compete with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

“Nowadays CTS competes with the 5 Series and E-Class, though we have faced the situation when we have nothing to offer for the segment of compact cars, which is one of the biggest on the market today.” Cadillac's spokesman Nick Twork said to the press.

Based on GM's Alpha platform, the base ATS will be equipped with a 270-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The fuel consumption is rated at 22/32mpg city/highway. Another trim level will feature a 3.6-liter V6 capable of 330 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with the 8-speed automatic gearbox, the V6 delivers fuel economy of 20 mpg city/30mpg highway.

The ATS sedan will go into production in July 2012, followed by the coupe a year after. All ATS models will be assembled at the General Motors assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan. The price is expected to start in the mid-$20,000 range.
