When the Buick Reatta was first introduced in 1988, it was advertized as a well-equipped luxury vehicle. It was a handmade sports coupe produced in Michigan, at the Lansing Assembly. The Reatta was sold by the Buick division of General Motors for only 4 years, from the early 1988 to 1991. GM hoped to sell 20,000 units a year, but since the total sales for 4 years were only 21,850, the Buick Reatta production was stopped in 1991. The vehicle was based on a shortened version of General Motors E platform used by a number of vehicles such as the Oldsmobile Toronado, Cadillac Eldorado and particularly the Buick Riviera. With the latter model, the Reatta shared many mechanical parts, interior furnishings, and electronics. All the Reatta models rode a 98.5-inch wheelbase, while the vehicle's length was 183.7 in, width - 73.0 in; and the height was 51.2 in during 1988-89 production years and 51.6 in during the next two years.

Initially offered as a hardtop sports coupe, a convertible version of the Reatta was added in 1990. As well as the coupe Reatta was the Buick's only sports coupe at the time, the convertible model was the first drop top vehicle produced by the company since the 1985 Riviera. The common styling cues included a bubbleback rear window and hidden headlamps. The Reatta used the Buick V6 engine good for 165–170 hp and 210–220 ft lb of torque with the maximum output level reached in the last production year. The vehicle sported 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, fully independent suspension, and front-wheel drive. Its maximum speed was electronically limited to 125 mph. The Buick Reatta was rated at 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. A 16-way power driver's seat and sunroof were offered as standard features, as well as a driver-side airbag, electronic gauges, and the Electronic Control Center (touchscreen computer interface). The latter option had a number of useful functions: a radio, climate control, trip computer, date reminder, and much more. The convertibles were available with a more conventional push button stereo, CD player, and climate control.

In 1988, Buick produced fifty five special Reattas that were allocated to sixty leading Buick dealers. These models were called "Select Sixties" and were all painted black. The only differences between these and typical Reattas were a X22 marketing code and a special Select Sixty hood emblem. The program was run again in 1990 with 65 convertibles being built. These had a flame red interior with white seats and were all painted white, including the 16-inch wheels. And again, all the "Select Sixties" were provided with special emblems for the hood. With a total production of just under 22,000 units, the Buick Reatta is a rare and unique collectors vehicle, appreciated for its fantastic styling, great handling, comfortable interior, and overall drivability. The drop top Reatta is in a class by itself, and thus it is even more collectible.
