Auto Express has noticed that the new 1-Series features a split personality. BMW will present three more practical cars with either front or all-wheel drive in addition to a family of rear-wheel-drive, sports-based autos. The company can now produce more versatile model to compete with Audi A1. The new 1-Series will be released later this year, available as a rear-wheel-drive model in three and five-door variants. The Coupé and Convertible will still use this layout due in 2012.
Three more spacious front-wheel-drive models will be offered by BMW later. All models will share new UKL1 platform, which was developed for the next-generation MINI. The vehicle might be identified as 1-Series GT in 2013. This model will be appealing to families, because of more space provided unlike the regular models. Moreover, the company is planning to launch the SUV, which is smaller than the X1. Available in both front and all-wheel-drive variants, the model will use the next MINI Countryman platform. All forthcoming models will carry a range of next-generation diesel and petrol engines, including a 1.5-liter three-cylinder which makes around 150 hp, featuring less than 100g/km of CO2.
