The law requires a breakaway system if your trailer has electric brakes. Simply, this means that if your trailer coupler separates from the ball, a lanyard attached to the tow vehicle will pull a pin out of a switch. This connects a small battery directly to the trailer brakes. This way, your errant trailer won’t continue down the road until it smashes into something, but simply brake smoothly to a halt.

This breakaway system is a vital safety system and should receive regular maintenance, including charging the small battery. Experts recommend replacing the entire breakaway system, battery, switch and wiring regularly every 3-5 years. The simplest place to mount the battery box is on the tongue of the trailer, but where isn’t as important as long as it works. You’ll need to make electrical connections to the brake circuit, a chassis ground and to the trailer 12V feed for a charger, if you install one.
