Many road racing sanctioning bodies, notably NASCAR, have established pit road speed limits to increase driver and pit crew safety. These speed limits can vary from track to track and even for different sections of pit road. The penalty for violating the pit road speed limit can be severe, even requiring the car to be placed at the tail end of the pack. But since race cars don’t have speedometers, how can you know your speed and avoid a costly penalty? With an Auto Meter Pit Road Speed (PRS) Warning Light!
Drivers routinely program their tachs before a race to know what RPM in a particular gear equals the legal pit road speed, but a warning light makes driving easier and safer. The PRS Warning Light’s intensely bright, quick reacting LED light can be easily seen with your peripheral vision, so you can concentrate on finding your pit and avoid other cars entering and exiting the pits, and pit crew personnel.
The PRS Warning Light set point can be configured by hitting the ENTER button when the car is in the desired gear and moving at the desired speed. This can also be done with a remote capture switch (sold separately) connected to the harness blue wire. Once the set point is configured, the RPM bands for each light mode can be set. For example, with a 3500 RPM set point, the warning light will be yellow from 3200-3400 RPM, indicating you should speed up. From 3401-3600 RPM the light will turn green, indicating the correct speed. From 3601-3700 RPM the light will turn red, indicating that you’re going too fast, and from 3701-4700 RPM it will flash red, further emphasizing that your speed is excessive.
The intense brightness of the LEDs in the PRS warning light are intended for maximum driver visibility during daytime operation and high glare situations, but full brightness is not recommended during dim or dark lighting conditions. The MODE button can be used to adjust the brightness setting.
The PRS Warning Light comes in a black tube that can be mounted to the dash or strapped to the steering column, and it can be configured for most 4, 6, and 8-cylinder engines. Comprehensive user and installation instructions are included and it’s backed by a limited 1-year warranty.245.73
