Getting the most accurate temperature data possible is vital for racing vehicles run at the extreme limits, where the difference between finishing a race and a DNF may be a matter of a few degrees. Unfortunately, conventional single channel gauges can have readings that vary up to 20°C from actual temperatures, and may cause you to believe a system is okay when in fact it’s overheated. The 4-Channel K-Type Thermocouple Amplifier can measure temperatures from 32°F to 1832°F (0°C to 1000°C). It utilizes low-cost K-Type thermocouples (not included), a type of temperature sensor, to measure multiple vehicle system temperatures with better accuracy and faster response times than currently available temperature measuring devices. In fact, AEM guarantees the 4-Channel K-Type Thermocouple Amplifier to read better than 1% full scale, even at the extremes of the temperature range.
This unit gets its laboratory-grade accuracy via a 100% surface-mounted printed circuit board that has 4 differential temperature inputs fed into an A/D converter and fitted using a stage-3, 8th order polynomial curve fit. The amplifier then compensates for this value using AEM’s on-board cold junction temperature measurement, and then sends the temperature outputs on feedback-monitored 0-5V analog outputs and an RS-232 serial data stream.
Multiple channels allow this amplifier to simultaneously read different system temperatures. Any K-Type thermocouple with common miniature thermocouple connectors can be used to provide input. The unit is designed either for integration into vehicles already fitted with aftermarket ECUs or other devices that can accept an analog signal for analysis or logging. AN RS-232 output is also available to allow other programmable devices to use or display the thermocouple temperature data.
The 4-Channel K-Type Thermocouple Amplifier is compact and lightweight, and comes with a mating harness. It includes fault LEDs that indicate when a thermocouple is faulty. The unit can be mounted in the engine compartment or under the dashboard, and secured with Velcro or using the mounting holes.
