The proper amount of air and fuel must enter your engine’s cylinders to attain the optimal combustion that is so important for making the most horsepower and preventing engine damage. Too much fuel in the AFR (a rich condition) can cause a loss of power, while too little fuel in the AFR (a lean condition) can cause serious engine damage. The AEM Wideband Air/Fuel UEGO Gauge is perfect for monitoring AFR and engine tuning, and the included 0-5V output can be used to output AFR data to a data logger and most programmable EMS. It comes with either analog or digital display, and each delivers unsurpassed accuracy, speed, and control in a standard 2 1/16” (52mm) gauge housing. Both can also be customized to match your interior, with included interchangeable black and white face plates, and black and silver bezels.
The analog gauge includes a precision high-speed stepper motor for lightning fast needle movement, and the 320 degrees of resolution on the gauge makes it easy to see when there’s even a half point change in AFR, so you’ll have plenty of time to shut down the engine to prevent damage. A dial on the back of the gauge allows you to change the backlighting to your choice of white, blue, light blue, orange, green, red, or aqua. There are 2 status lights on the gauge face. The light on the left is on during sensor warm up, and turns off once the sensor reaches operating temperature, usually within 30 seconds. During sensor warm up, AFR readings may not be accurate. The light on the right will flash if an error is detected. It will flash on and off a number of times, followed by a short pause, indicating a code. 1-6 flashes indicate a fault with the sensor wiring or sensor, while 7 flashes indicate system voltage below 10VDC.
The digital gauge has a bright, 3-digit LED display and sweeping LED “needle” that lines the edge of the gauge face as the AFR changes. The large LED numerals will quickly alert you to even a 0.1 change in AFR, providing time to shut the engine down before damage occurs.
The gauge owes its speed and accuracy to the Bosch 4.2LSU sensor. Ordinary “narrow band” O2 sensors, like those used on production vehicles, are only accurate within a very narrow AFR range, the region surrounding stoichiometric operation and leaner. In the rich region where high-performance engines usually operate, they are highly inaccurate. The Bosch 4.2LSU UEGO sensor however, is a wideband sensor and able to detect the exhaust’s O2 content across a wide range. It uses a “current pump” to determine the actual oxygen concentration within the sensing element. The output is in the form of a very small current, which varies depending on the AFR. This is completely different from a narrow band O2 sensor, which directly outputs a voltage. The UEGO sensor design allows measurement of the exact AFR over the entire operating range. Each sensor is individually calibrated and a resistor integral at the connector body is laser trimmed with this value. This process replaces the traditional “free air” calibration procedure when changing sensors and implements a sensor specific calibration for unparalleled accuracy.

John Concialdi and Bob Sullivan co founded AEM in 1987 as a tuning performance shop in Compton California.
