2003 Lincoln Navigator | Posted by Matt | (Sibley, IA)

I was trying to piece together my 2004 navigator air suspension by replacing the left rear bag and shock. I paid too much for a complete used set but thought I would be money ahead since they included the solenoids and lines in case I ran into anything else. I replaced the rear bag which worked great after that, but I couldn't get the front end to stay up. It kept searching for the correct height. I brought it in to have the ride height calibrated and it was okay for a while until it got cold out. It sounded as if the pressure was too high and was bleeding out of the left front and it would be slammed to ground sometimes. other times (still in the same cold temps) everything would be fine. I started shopping for a coilover conversion, but none of the kits I found showed me a shock brand name, including Arnott's standard ride height kit. I found winch springs in some kits, cheap kits that sounded like they would last until you could quick sell your vehicle. This was the only kit that I could verify that they used Bilstein shocks which is the only shock I use on my vehicles unless they're not available (can't find any for my 03 Grand Prix). I would've rather installed the Arnott factory ride height kit if I knew the shocks were made by Bilstein, but this kit seemed to be the best available at the time. I only had a couple hours a night to work on the install so I did one corner a night and took a little extra time swapping wheels to make sure the 22's that already installed on the navigator would fit. They fit and ride great. I still need an alignment and may try to install a front leveling (1-1/2"-2") kit, but it drives fine so far so I'm 110% happier than the stock air setup. I'm sure I'm not the only one that tried to give ford's air suspension a chance, but it's only a matter of time before it fails. I know there were a lot of variables involved, but my setup only has 85k miles and whoever had it before I bought it must've drove it in a salt mine and/or didn't have access to soap, water or a pressure washer. I'm sure I'll have a lot more issues in the future, but it looks and rides great after ditching the air setup. Thanks CARiD.com
