The AEM Electronically Tuned Air Intake system is the next generation of intake technology. With its revolutionary ETI module, AEM has successfully solved a problem without reducing performance. The problem relates to the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor, which on most modern fuel injected vehicles determines the airflow rate into the engine and meters fuel accordingly. The problem occurs when the intake tube diameter is increased, as is common on aftermarket performance air intake systems. When the tube diameter is increased, airspeed is reduced, which affects the MAF sensor signal and could possibly cause a CHECK ENGINE light. Many intake manufacturers reduce the diameter of the tube at the MAF sensor location in order to maintain airspeed so the MAF will not be affected. However, reducing the diameter creates a restriction and reduces airflow into the engine. AEM has chosen an alternative approach that maintains intake tube diameter and results in more airflow into the throttle body. The ETI module electronically communicates with the MAF sensor to ensure that the proper amount of fuel is delivered even with a larger diameter intake tube. Every AEM air intake system comes with the innovative, oil-free, high-flow AEM Dryflow air filter. Each Dryflow filter is engineered to exceed the normal flow capacities of the engine it is required for when clean, while providing outstanding filtration and dust holding capacity. And the flow requirements are exceeded by a wide margin, which allows you plenty of leeway for engine breathing modifications, without needing to worry about having enough intake airflow. The AEM Dryflow filter is constructed of a unique non-woven polyester-based filter media supported by aluminum screen wire for rigid structural strength. This filter media doesn’t require oil to filter and trap dirt and contaminants, and actually sheds dirt under engine vibration, unlike cotton-gauze, which holds onto contaminants until you clean the filter. When it’s time to clean, simply tapping the filter a few times will remove most of the dirt from the filter pleats. Then spray the filter with AEM’s environmentally friendly, mild, all-purpose cleaner. Rinse the filter with clean water and allow to dry, or blow dry with compressed air. Best of all, the Dryflow filter requires no oiling, so there’s never a chance of over-oiling. John Concialdi and Bob Sullivan co founded AEM in 1987 as a tuning performance shop in Compton California. Both men had extensive technical backgrounds in engines and engine airflow, and in a short time AEM became the go-to company for performance modifications. By 1993, when the company relocated to Gardena California, it had become commonplace to see cars wearing the bright yellow AEM logo winning races. AEM tirelessly dyno tested and worked closely with racers and auto manufacturers in an effort to understand intake energy dynamics. This resulted in the sale of their first air intake kit in 1994. AEM can boast a number of firsts and unique products: They’re the first manufacturer to make an intake system with specific tube lengths and diameters to take advantage of pressure waves in the inlet tract; they developed the first dual chamber intake kit; they designed an air bypass valve to prevent hydro-lock should the air filter ingest water; and they created one of the first hybrid intake systems for modified cars.
