The GMC Suburban is considered one of the more influential vehicles of the 20th century. Although having morphed into various forms throughout the years, the GMC Suburban stands as perhaps the first real full-size SUV to capture the country's attention. Variants of the vehicle started being produced as far back as the 1930s, beginning with a sort of utility-driven station wagon built on a half-ton truck body directed towards military personnel. Eventually, the model was revised and marketed to regular consumers as the Chevy Carryall Suburban, a wagon that had the ability to seat eight passengers. The model would keep the Carryall moniker into the early part of the '70s, when GM finally re-branded the vehicle as the GMC Suburban. Upon its debut as the Suburban, it showcased a base small-block V8 engine with a larger 400 cubic-inch configuration optional, as well as a 454 big-block. As for the its body-style, the Suburban was a four-door vehicle that still sported an exterior that resembled the previous generation's design. The model was also made available with both two and four-wheel drive. Two-wheel drive versions of the Suburban were referred to as the "C" while four-wheel drive variants were branded the "K." GMC also used 1500 and 2500 to differentiate between the half-ton and three-quarter ton. One-ton models were known as the 3500.

Engines were directed through a Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission separated by size. In the Suburban 1500 (half-ton), the Turbo-Hydramatic 350 was equipped. In the 2500, a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 was used. Several changes to the GMC Suburban parts and components were made during the mid-80s, including limited slip differential (positraction) and standard antilock brakes (on two-wheel drive versions). Electronic fuel injection (GM's Throttle Body Injection) began being used in 1986, switching over from carburetors in order to improve emissions and fuel-efficiency. In 1992, GMC unveiled the second generation of the Suburban based on the GMT400 platform, which also hosted the K5 Blazer and CK. The same numeric nomenclature was used (1500, 2500, etc.), but the base engine was changed to a small-block 5.7L V8 with a 7.4L big-block once again available for the 2500 Suburban.

Trim levels for the GMC Suburban were the base, the LS, and the top-tier LT. The interior was revised, adding a driver's side airbag and new mirrors. The under-hood GMC Suburban parts were updated once again in the middle of the decade. Other changes included electronic four-wheel drive shifting, daytime running lights, improved steering, and a passenger-side airbag. More upgrades followed but by the end of the '90s, GMC was set to replace the Suburban on its roster with the Yukon XL while the model would stay in the Chevy lineup. The GMC Suburban is still alive and well on the road, and is recognized for its pioneering contribution to the full-sized SUV segment. Models such as the Escalade, Yukon, and Tahoe are direct descendents of the Suburban, further ensuring that its legacy and place in automotive history is secure.
