Everyone likes the looks of larger diameter wheels and tall, aggressive looking tires. But many drivers wonder why after installing them their vehicle suddenly feels a lot slower. This is because the larger wheels and tires have effectively lowered the gear ratio. If you had 3.55 ratio gears with stock tires, the effective gear ratio may be more like 3.08 ratio with tires that are 4 or 5 inches taller. The lower ratio means less torque multiplication and slower acceleration. Larger wheels and tires are also heavier, meaning the same horsepower output must now move more weight. Changing the gear ratio to suit the tires will make sure you retain the same performance and get similar fuel economy, or you can even go to an even lower ratio for better acceleration and even more stump pulling torque.
