A timing belt is designed to enable the crankshaft to drive the camshaft and synchronize the movement of the engine’s valves and pistons. On many engines, it also drives the oil pump, water pump and balance shafts. It's a flat rubber belt with teeth which maintain precise timing between internal engine components to ensure smooth and efficient operation. Because of high rotational speeds, vibrations and extreme temperatures, timing belts and matching components are constantly subjected to a great deal of stress.
