The positive pressure your turbo generates inside your intake manifold, intercooler and all of its piping is as important a signal as to your engine’s health. Too little pressure (underboost) is caused by a dirty air cleaner, a leak somewhere in the manifold, intercooler or ducting, or a wastegate that’s stuck open. Underboost costs you power and sucks extra fuel. Too much pressure (overboost) can be caused by a stuck-closed wastegate, a bad turbo vane controller or a misadjusted metering pump. Overboost can damage your engine within seconds. Keep track of the manifold pressure continuously by monitoring this gauge. Installation requires a port into the intake system to attach the pressure lead, and access through the firewall for the pressure line to the gauge back.
Similarly, the temperature of the exhaust gas as it exits the turbo is indicative of your vehicle’s health. Excess EGT can damage the turbocharger, cat, DPF or even the exhaust system. If you’ve enhanced the power output of your engine, an EGT monitor is absolutely essential to prevent engine damage.
