The Blackbird brake controller by Hayes activates your trailer brakes with a preset intensity. Then the signal is sent to the trailer brakes when the tow vehicle's brakes are activated. The amount of power sent to the trailer brakes can be adjusted depending on road conditions, trailer type, and load size. For example, when towing on the bumpy road or when your trailer is fully loaded, you can set it to a higher output. When towing an empty trailer, you can set it lower.

The Blackbird features an easy-to-read LED screen that displays the brake power output, ramp setting, and error codes. While braking, the display shows the amount of power going to the trailer brakes as a percentage of the total power available. When the brake pedal is released, the unit will go into standby mode. A power ramp setting is responsible for determining the aggressiveness with which the brakes are applied. If you need to get full power, move the switch forward to increase activation speed. To achieve smoother braking, move the switch in the opposite direction to supply power gradually.

This brake controller has built-in safeguards providing for your safe trailering. For example, a manual override activates the brake lights on the tow vehicle and trailer. There is also a current limiter that protects the vehicle from shorts in the trailer wiring. It also has hazard flasher immunity for preventing pulsing of the brakes when flashers are activated. The product is quick and easy to install. It can be mounted at any angle in any plane and in any direction.
