At high speeds a properly designed spoiler can provide downforce at the rear of a car, and in some cases it may even improve aerodynamics, depending on the car's shape. The distance between the rear edge of the roof and the back end of the car can be very steep, disrupting airflow and increasing drag. This distance can, in effect, be lengthened or the slope made gentler by a spoiler, which will prevent airflow separation and reduce drag. Of course, these effects can usually only be realized at speeds in excess of the legal limit. The factory installs spoilers more for aesthetics than performance, and now you can have the same image of speed for your car.
