Mazda Protege 1.8L 1999-2000, RD Series Cold Air Intake System by InjenŽ. The RD Series is made for the enthusiast who wants improved mid-range power. This cold air system positions a high-flow air filter behind the bumper, where it can take in cooler, denser air. The cool air then flows to the engine through a fee-flowing aluminum alloy intake tube. Cooler air contains more oxygen for more complete combustion and more horsepower. Up to 5.6 HP Gain.
It's a well known fact that cooler, denser air contains more oxygen, and more oxygen in your engine's air intake charge means better combustion and more power. Hot air contains fewer oxygen molecules, and if your engine is fed hot air there will be less oxygen and therefore less power. Yet that's exactly what your engine gets with the factory air intake system! The solution to this problem is to install an Injen RD Series Cold Air Intake System.
Injen starts the power improvement process by positioning an Injen High Performance air filter behind the front bumper. Here, this free-flowing filter can take in the coolest air possible and funnel it through smooth, mandrel-bent 6061 aluminum alloy tubing. Injen designs and repeatedly tests its systems for each application to make sure they're the least restrictive, all the way to the throttle body. So, instead of power-robbing hot air squeezing through a restrictive air filter and intake duct, your engine is taking in huge quantities of cool air surging through free-flowing tubing. The result is increased horsepower and torque, and improved performance you can feel!
The RD system is carefully engineered, with CNC machined brackets and adapters, to ensure an exact fit. Installation can be accomplished with simple hand tools and everything necessary for installation is supplied, including comprehensive instructions. The RD Series Cold Air Intake System is backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

I think that the CAI is fantastic! Works great, I can see a real increase in performance from time of install. The increases at the higher speeds is great as well. The only complaint I have is with the rubber mount you install to put the intake on, is that mine squeaks. I can hear a squeak at times from this mount. No biggie just a little tweaking.
My buddy a week before installed a short intake and I didn't really notice a difference. However, I did notice the difference with my Injen intake. First off when reading through the instructions I assumed the installation would take a whole weekend, but when all was said and done it only took collectively 3 hours done by myself. Definitely a big deal who really isn't mechanically inclined. As for the difference, the car makes a great sound when you accelerate and definitely gave the car more pick up.
I ordered this intake for my 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 and it's great! The install was a breeze and I didn't even have to take off the front bumper like the instruction tell you to. All you have to do is take out the screws on the splash guard by the tire, and it easily moves out of the way for you. Definitely recommend this intake for the Speed as it gives a cool BOV type air noise as you drive. The performance boost is noticeable immediately as well. Have never gotten such an increase just from an intake.
Okay... what to say first about this, i'll start with the negatives. -Couple things in the instrutions didn't mention where to put the vacuum seal but i managed to find a spot -Filter was WAY to small to fit over intake pipping (had to cut a slit in the filter, lube it up, and use flat heads to lever it on) -Couldn't put heat guard because they didn't provide big enough clamps to go around the filter after putting it on the intake pipe Now for some positives... -Great sound -Noticeable gain in power and gas mileage -Looks great once installed -Directions were very easy to follow
