A ring and pinion gear set will generally provide many miles of reliable service, but with age and miles problems can develop, particularly if maintenance has been neglected. A leaky pinion seal or differential housing can allow the fluid level to be too low in the housing, causing the ring and pinion to fail from a lack of lubrication. Gear teeth can crack or break, especially if they contact debris from other failed components like bearings inside the fluid. Ring gear bolts can back off and break off. Such damage can exhibit symptoms like rattling, knocking and clunking noises.
For Jeeps and other off-road vehicles that are fitted with larger diameter wheels and tires, ring and pinions are usually changed to maintain performance with the taller tires. For example, a Jeep with 28" tall tires and a 3.07 gear ratio would need a 3.73 gear ratio to have approximately the same cruising rpm in top gear when 33" tall tires are installed.
