The long haul test

Knee jerk evaluations that last only days or weeks are worthless. Rarely can you measure how great/awful something is until it has been in use for several years and 100-200,000+ miles and or thousands of hours of engine run time. If you drive like Grandma to church on Sunday, then you don't need oil additives if you pay attention to service schedules in the owners manual. If you drive with your foot in the floor more often than once in a while or spend significant amounts of time driving daily and weekly with idling, towing, off road driving, one foot on the brake and the other on the gas pedal, then you need enhanced additives like STP to keep things lubed whether when oil pressures are lower at idle and at traffic jam speeds or when oil pressures are higher like when hitting the gas pedal from a dead stop or sustained highway speeds above 55 MPH. I have used blue bottle STP driving cross country many years ago in my VW Rabbit GTI and VW Jetta and it cut my oil consumption in half between 3K + oil change intervals. I use lower viscosity red bottle STP for the added ZDDP in higher mileage vehicles. Stated ZDDP content on the MSDS is 1%-5% which is significant but not dangerously high like "Racing Oil" that is not intended to be run for 7K miles at a stretch due to low detergent levels. My oil is noticeably cleaner, longer, when running STP red bottle in my 1988 Cadillac DeVille and I just started using it in my recently acquired 1991 Silverado 5.7 liter that I de-sludged since the last owner was an infrequent Jiffy lube owner. I pulled a quart of sludge out of the heads and valve covers. Grandma's car might not need it, unless she's running a blown 454 CID under the hood, but it's good for the rest of us (the 80% of us who drive according to the engine manufacture's "severe service" schedule) as cheap insurance for the long run and hard to harsh driving conditions we inflict on our motor. You have to increase your tire pressure to the maximum listed on the sidewall before towing or hauling significant loads; so, why would you neglect adding STP to the oil when increased performance is required?
