Pontiac Firebird 1969, High Performance U-Joint by Lakewood®. Lakewood offers single replacement U-joints for front and rear applications available in a selection of inside span, outside yoke span, and cap diameter dimensions. Designed for heavy-duty racetrack use, cross body pieces are forged from one piece of high-carbon solid steel for exceptional rigidity along with higher strength and durability than OEM equipment. Heat-treating optimizes the hardness and wear factor of needle bearings which allow pivoting, and yoke end bearing caps are crafted from a chrome-nickel-molybdenum alloy for better shock resistance. Sealed bearings need no lubrication or maintenance.

A universal joint (U-joint) is the cross-shaped piece that provides a simple, flexible connection between two rotating shafts which operate at different angles. It mounts within a yoke, and does not need an outer protective boot due to its relatively simple design. If you're considering upgrading a CV joint to a U-joint for greater strength when operating angles become more severe, or you simply need a stronger U-joint that can take upgraded power and torque, Lakewood offers High-Performance U-joints in the exact size or sizes you need. They match original dimensions for an easy fit, but feature high-carbon steel construction that's been heat-treated for maximum strength consistency.
Heat-treating also reduces the wear factor of the needle bearings which allow pivoting, and end caps are crafted from a chrome-nickel-molybdenum alloy for better shock resistance. Bearings are sealed, so the hassle of lubricating them regularly is eliminated. To ensure your new U-joint is precisely the correct size as the one you are replacing on your vehicle, you'll need to measure both the bearing cap diameter and the yoke span (see attached illustration). Measurements can be taken with the old joint still in the yoke or by itself off the vehicle. If you're determining sizes with the Y-joint removed from the yoke, make sure the 4 bearing caps are fully pressed down and seated.
