A transfer case is an attribute of 4WD vehicles. Its fundamental function is to deliver power to both of the vehicle's axles. Essentially, a transfer case is a gear set used in some off-road capable vehicles for improving their off-road performance and practical usefulness. In its simplest form, a transfer case has a differential that works just like the axle diff distributing rotational speed between the axles. Plus, in 4WD vehicles, a transfer case functions as a coupling that can engage or disengage one of the drive axles if needed.
