Since the dawn of the 1960s, Mini has provided motorists with a subcompact machine that delivers both fuel-efficiency and good looks. Born in England, Mini was initially produced by the British Motor Corporation and distributed through the company's Austin and Morris marque. In 1961, the name Mini began being used. The first model was met with a wave of acceptance right away, as fuel-starved English motorists were in need of a lightweight vehicle that conserved on gas. Thanks to racing engineer John Cooper, the Mini got a revved-up makeover that saw its horsepower get ratcheted up from 34 to 76 on the Cooper S model. Numerous victorious racing exploits followed, including taking home the checkered flag at the Monte Carlo Rally from 1964 to 1967.
The Mini remained one of the most talked-about models of the '60s. Even a pickup version of the diminutive passenger car became available, as did the Mini Moke, a Jeep-inspired compact utility vehicle originally designed for military purposes. In 1969, the Clubman arrived, featuring a boxier front-end and various other restyling cues. Over two million Minis were produced by the end of the decade, demonstrating the brand's immense popularity, especially in Europe, as the vehicle was no longer sold in the US as of 1968. However, Mini still thrived in Europe during the '70s and '80s, eclipsing the five million mark in the process. A cameo in the film "The Italian Job" in 1969 further cemented its pop-culture status.
BMW purchased Mini in 1994 by taking over the Rover Group, whom at that time owned BMC. With Rover consistently losing money, BMW sold off most the assets, including Land Rover, which went to Ford. But BMW held onto Mini and by 2002, the vehicle was back stateside in the form of the Mini Cooper hatchback. Appropriately, the Mini Cooper was featured in the remake of "The Italian Job", which helped reintroduce the car to American audiences. Currently, the Mini lineup includes the Cooper, Cooper S, and Clubman, with both Cooper models also available as a convertible.
