The ignition system of a gasoline engine is available in four main types, by the order of their appearance: the mechanical (breaker-point), electronic, distributorless (waste spark), and coil-on-plug ignition. The first two types use a distributor, the device for transferring high-voltage impulses coming from the ignition coil among several contacts whose number is equal to the number of spark plugs. While the first type provides a physical contact between the distributor rotor and contacts located in the cap, the second one (electronic) transfers power via a small gap between these parts; the current it works with is stronger, and such a distributor has a different construction.

Launched in 1997, the early versions of the Dodge Durango came with electronic ignition, and this system features two parts that have to be replaced once in a certain interval: a distributor cap and rotor. Both of them have metal contacts that never contact directly with each other but gradually wear out due to electrical erosion. Besides, the cap has a spring-loaded center graphite pin that touches the spinning rotor; this piece of graphite is subject to abrasion.
